About this Item

8vo. Original salmon colored printed wrappers. 34pp. Very good. Outer wrappers (only) lightly soiled, else internally very good. First edition of this rather scarce pamphlet, tight and decent, printed in two-column format. Hall (1810-74) was Millard Fillmore's law partner as a young man, a one-term Congressman who became President Fillmore's postmaster general in 1850, serving honestly and ably until 1852, at which point the outgoing president named him federal judge in northern New York, a post he filled until his death on March 2 -- six days later his old friend Fillmore died, and their graves lie practically side by side at the same cemetery in Buffalo. Benedict (born 1808) was an Elmyra, New York attorney who became a Campbellite minister in 1848. During the Civil War he preached against the war, for which he was arrest without writ of habeas corpus. SABIN 29831. Bookseller Inventory # 36137
