Lyon, J. Mareschallum, 1584. , 521 pp. Woodcut device on title-page. 12mo size, contemporary hardcover bluepaper boards. An early printed collection of medieval medical texts. The contents comprise: Corti, Matteo: Ad tyrunculos dosandi methodus. - Vittori, Benedetto: Compendium, de dosibus medicinarum. - Montagnana, Bartolomeo: De modo componendi medicinas, & de dosi earum. - Gentile da Foligno: De proportionibus medicinarum - Tommaso del Garbo: Tractatus de reductione medicinarum ad actum. - Ya'qub ibn Ishaq al-Kindi: De Gradibus Medicinarum (full title: De medicinarum compositarum gradibus investigandis). - Rondelet, Guillaume: De ponderibus, sive de justa quantitate - Gorris, Pierre de: Formulae remediorum, quibus vulgo medici utuntur. - All treatises in this collection were printed earlier, and now very hard to find. Even this collected edition is a rarity. A remarkable fact about this collection is that it contains a treatise by Al-Kindi, the early medieval scientist from Basra who is often regarded as the father of Islamic or Arabic philosophy. Al-Kindi wrote on many subjects. Some of his works were translated into Latin. His treatise "de medicinarum compositatarum" got renewed interest from by European scientists in the renaissance. A printed latin translation first appeared in Strasburg in 1531. It was reprinted as an appendix to another collection of medical works in 1558, and reprinted again to form part of the collection of medical titles which is here on offer. In this work, Al-Kindi attempts to apply mathematics to pharmacology by quantifying the strength of drugs. -- A good to very good copy. Boards worn and somewhat soiled. Old handwritten title vignette on spine. Internally very good, except for the title page where some paper loss has been very professionally restored. The paper loss affects the final "m" in Mareschallum in the imprint, as well as 4 of the lines of the text on the verso. Title page with a an ink number in a very old hand. There are a few instances of old ink underlining and cross-outs to the text, and several marginalia, else very good. In all, still a nice copy of a very rare work. Bookseller Inventory #
