About this Item

The death of a high official, ecclesiastical or secular, in the early modern era led to official elaborate commemorative ceremonies, including sermons and processions. This publication was sponsored by and produced under the aegis of Villase?or y Monroy, the vicar-general of the archbishopric and the rector of the royal university, and publishes the two sermons delivered at the university (of which, regrettably one is missing here). The first sermon was in Latin, entitled "Libitina funebris oratio ad pios manes" and was written and delivered by Juan Hernando de Gracia. Most unfortunately missing is the second, " El trino llanto de la sabia Rachel la real Universidad de Mexico. En la muerte de su hijo . . . Antonio de Monroy" written and delivered by the famous orator Bartholome Felipe de Ita, y Parra. => There is a very good woodcut of the coat of arms of the university. Small 4to. [11] ff., 20 pp., lacks last 16 ff. Medina, Mexico, 2475; Palau 368817; Sabin 50035. Removed from a nonce volume and priced for its incompleteness. Bookseller Inventory # 35329
