About this Item

Small 4to. Original grey-green printed wrappers. 40pp. Good plus. Outer wrappers edgeworn and age toned, with single chip on rear wrapper and stapled. First edition of this patriotic address by the then-young academic, the first volume of whose monumental "History of the United States" had been published in 1834; in 1835 he moved to Springfield and at the time of this speech was working on the second volume of his opus. This is the author's corrected copy, bearing a small number of minor, mainly punctuation corrections in heavy, rich brown ink. On page 11 appears the sentence "The tory tolerates no elective franchise; the whig gives a vote to none but men of property." -- and here Bancroft crosses out the words "gives a vote" and in the margin pens in "entrusts the franchise," penning these words again even larger in the bottom margin to make sure the typesetter sees them. A second edition of this speech was issued later this same year, adding "Prefatory Remarks," so presumably Bancroft's corrections were accomplished for this purpose. Unusual. BAL 626. SABIN 3140.
