About this Item

Full 18th century dark brown calf, expertly rebacked with original spines laid down. Spine divided into compartments by six raised bands, compartments densely tooled in gilt, gilt-lettered black morocco labels in second compartments. Boards somewhat scuffed, minor losses to head and tails of spine prior to restoration. An attractive and imposing set. First Delphin edition of Cicero s Orations. The series was commissioned by Louis XIV for his son and heir Louis, le grand Dauphin. The editions aimed at comprehensiveness, with Latin text, notes, paraphrase, and glosses, though oftentimes the texts were expurgated. Seller Inventory # ABE-1670478574923
