The text, which is partially opened, is free of defects and illustrations protected with tissue guards. An exceptional set of this important study of orchids of North America along with notes on Philippine orchids. Provenance: Oakes Ames signs the entire set on front free end paper of each volume with presentation note to F (ridijoff) Holmboe of Daytona Beach, FL. There is an accompanying letter from Ames to Holmboe dated March 15, 1949 mentioning that he is at home to receive Mr. Homboe but noting that there may not be many Florida orchids in bloom. Letter on stationary with Ormond, Florida at top. Also, there is a carbon copy of a letter from Holmboe to Ames dated March 10, 1949 asking if he could call on Ames as Holmboe, wife and son will be "pass through your town within a week or so…" Holmboe was collecting Kodachromes of orchids for his own collection, noting that he had some assistance from Dr. Buswell at Coral Gables who, unfortunately, "has not done any field work for many years." Holmboe was a professional photographer of orchids. His prints were collected and found in archives such as that of Francis Morris, naturalist writer. Bookseller Inventory # 0000716
