About this Item

6 volume set (out of 8). Small 4to. Red cloth. xiv, 593pp; viii, 590pp; x, 436pp; xiv, 557pp; 532pp; 448pp. Frontispieces, illustrations, maps. Very good. Tight and handsome near complete set, lacking the 3rd and 4th volumes ("The Emergence of Lincoln" pair). This bibliographically complicated set was originally issued between 1947 and 1971. While the title of the entire set is "Ordeal of the Union," the set consists of three independent entities: the first two volumes alone bear that title, the third and fourth volumes (missing here) are titled "The Emergence of Lincoln," and the fifth through eighth volumes are titled "The War for the Union." This reprint set (only the seventh and eighth volumes bear a 1971 date) likely date from 1971, when the last volumes were issued and the entire set was reprinted in its entirety. About this title

With The Organized War to Victory: 1864-1865, Allan Nevins completes his masterly study of the American Civil War. The qualities of clarity, absolute command of the sources, and full recognition of the drama inherent in the theme, which have distinguished the previous volumes can all be found here as well. And there is something more: a communication without sentimentality of the heartbreak of this national tragedy for the victors as well as the vanquished. ("He seemed," wrote one observer of President Lincoln, "to be in mourning for all the dead of all the endless battles.") Nevins provides the reader with an analysis of the social and economic effects of the conflict which is outstanding for wisdom and depth.Allan Nevins won the National Book Award for The Organized War to Victory: 1864-1865 and The Organized War: 1863-1864, the preceding volume in The War for the Union. All four volumes of the War for the Union are currently available from Konecky & Konecky.
