Title: Ordeal of the Union.
Publisher: Charles Scribner's Sons , New York
Publication Date: 1971
6 volume set (out of 8). Small 4to. Red cloth. xiv, 593pp; viii, 590pp; x, 436pp; xiv, 557pp; 532pp; 448pp. Frontispieces, illustrations, maps. Very good. Tight and handsome near complete set, lacking the 3rd and 4th volumes ("The Emergence of Lincoln" pair). This bibliographically complicated set was originally issued between 1947 and 1971. While the title of the entire set is "Ordeal of the Union," the set consists of three independent entities: the first two volumes alone bear that title, the third and fourth volumes (missing here) are titled "The Emergence of Lincoln," and the fifth through eighth volumes are titled "The War for the Union." This reprint set (only the seventh and eighth volumes bear a 1971 date) likely date from 1971, when the last volumes were issued and the entire set was reprinted in its entirety.
