About this Item

Edited by E.B. Long. Small 4to. Black cloth, dust jacket. viii, 500pp. Illustrations, 12 maps. Fine/fine. Superb, tight first edition of this abridgement -- from the collection of noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar ARNOLD F. GATES (1914-93). Tipped to the inner flyleaf are two choice autograph additions: First is a Typed Note Signed from Nevins, 1p, 5½" X 8½", San Marino, CA, 1968 February 5. Addressed to Arnold Gates. Fine. On "Henry E. Huntington Library and Art Gallery" letterhead, Nevins relays information on the Society of American Historians, closing with "I am still hard at work on my Ordeal of the Union Series." Signed in full in blue ballpoint. Secondly, a Typed Note Signed from E.B. "Pete" Long, 1p, heavy stock 5½" X 3¼" postal card, [Laramie, WY], 1972 December 17. Addressed to Arnold Gates. Near fine. Great content on the editing of this book, reading in part: "My project. is limited to excerpts from the 8-vol. Ordeal. I do know that other projects are being considered, which would utilize speeches, articles, and other suck-like material. I am moving along well with my 'reader' and hope to have it completed by mid-January. I find that the 8-vols. are so well worth going over again, though I am familiar with them of course. The last two vols., 7 & 8, I had a great deal to do with, as you know, as Dr. Nevins was not in robust health during that period." Handsome "Cordially, / E.B. 'Pete' Long" penned in blue ballpoint. Nevins (1890-1971) won the Pulitzer Prize for this multi-volume set, and Long (1919-81) authored and edited a wide array of histories. A choice copy. Bookseller Inventory # 33235
