About the Book

We're sorry; this specific copy is no longer available. Here are our closest matches for Ordinary Cats by Jones, Shirley.

Five folio sheets, + a 4ff. quarto booklet. From an edition of seventy, this is one of twelve deluxe copies with an extra booklet containing a poem by Shirley Jones, aphorisms about cats selected by Jones, and a lovely miniature oval mezzotint of a curled-up sleeping cat. This is copy number one and has a personal inscription to friends of the artist. Each of the large mezzotints is numbered, titled, dated, and signed in pencil by the artist. Included in the set is a handwritten letter by Jones, on Red Hen Press letterhead, to the book's recipients. The five plates measure 15 by 12 inches and feature whimsical portraits of cats set against rich velvet-textured ebony backgrounds. The artist hand-set and printed the text in dark blue-green 24-point Baskerville italic type, on Rives mould-made paper. Housed in a turquoise cloth drop-back box, which harmonizes with the type color. Jones, who specializes in mezzotint-the most complex and time-consuming printmaking process-has created a stunning set of prints. A beautiful, affectionate, and highly personal example of artistry, literature, and presentation by one of Wales's leading book artists. Prospectus laid-in. Extremely fine. Bookseller Inventory #

Book Description The Red Hen Press, 1992., 1992. 17 x 21. A suite of 5 large mezzotints, with tissue guards. WITH an octavo booklet of 8 pages containing a miniature mezzotint and selected texts reminding the reader that, as Colette remarked, "There are no ordinary cats." In turquoise cloth tray case, vellum label on cover. Case is lightly sunned at spine & top edge; it has a small puncture looking suspiciously as if made by a cat claw. Mezzotints are fine. With prospectus. Delightful images (plate size 12 x 15) are elegant and humorous at the same time. Titled, numbered, dated, & signed by the artist. Their titles are: Parvenu, Metropolitan on Safari, Savaging a Dead Sheep, The Riposte, and What Bird? Text is printed in green, quotations in italics. Each image was printed in an edition of 70. But only 12 were boxed as sets and accompanied by the printed text. This is no. 9 of 12 sets. Seller Inventory # 17962
