Illustrated cloth. 450 copies printed by Lawton Kennedy. Illustrations; includes map of the track of the U. S. line-of-battle ship Columbus in the years 1845-1848. The author was a surgeon in the United States Navy and completed many drawings of what he observed during his Navy tours. As the title indicates, the drawings in this book are of points of interest in Oregon and California with descriptions of the locations. He was court martialed in 1842 for an "error of opinion", but because he was a man of high honor and integrity the President reduced the punishment to suspension without pay or emolument, for twelve months. After completing his one-year punishment he was assigned to the Columbus which sailed to China where a trade agreement was to be ratified and another one attempted with Japan; this tour ended in March, 1848. The Columbus "had been away 1002 days and had sailed completely around the world, her course measuring 69,485 miles". Bookseller Inventory # 3379
