About this Item

First Edition. Pages 159 pp.8vo. Orange cloth covered boards with gilt lettering on spine and gilt figure of Pickwick on front cover. D.J. First Edition. Copiously illustrated. Published as part of the Pickwick Centenary celebration. A review copy. Tucked in are a request for review form as well as an engraved notation of"With the Compliments of Mesrs. Chapman & Hall Ld." This volume by two of this century's most distinguished Dickensians provides a vigorous defense of Dickens' role in generating the success of "Pickwick Papers" against the claims of Mrs. Seymour, the wife of the original illustrator. Seymour had committed suicide early in the publication history. Dickens, with his inimitable self confidence, then took over and persuaded the publishers to accept his ideas for the continuation of "Pickwick," resulting in its consequent enormous popular success and the launching of Dickens' vast career. A scarce title. Foxing. Else, Very Good. Bookseller Inventory # 8408
