Fine. The photograph is in dark tones and shows Dreiser facing the camera, but looking up slightly to his right. Theodore Dreiser (1871 - 1945) is best known for his novels Sister Carrie (1900) and An American Tragedy (1925) and was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1930. Carl Van Vechten (1880 - 1964) was a writer and photographer of such well-known artists, actors, and writers as Edward Albee, Marian Anderson, James Baldwin, Thomas Hart Benton, Truman Capote, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, F.
