circa 1850's. Original carte de visite photo portrait (subject is seated with left elbow on table). Dimensions 2 1/2 x 4 inches (card), 2 1/8 x 3 1/4 (photo). From back of photo : "Published by E. & H.T. Anthony 501 Broadway New York from photographic negative in Brady's National Portrait Gallery" Reverend Beecher (1813-1887) was a prominent clergyman, abolitionist and speaker. His sister was the author Harriet Beecher Stowe. The later part of his life was marred by the Beecher-Tilton Scandal, in which the Reverend was accused of adultery with a married woman. The resulting trail in 1875 was one of the most infamous trials of the century. Bookseller Inventory # 15020
