circa.1860. Carte-de-Visite photograph (2 3/8 x 3 3/4 inch) with publisher's name on the backside. The upper corners have been trimmed. Image of O'Connell seated in a chair (painting). Daniel O'Connell (1775-1847) was a Irish political leader during the first half of the 19th century. Known as 'The Liberator' he was in favor of Catholic Emancipation and the repeal of the Act of Union between Ireland and Great Britain. Believing in non-violence he is cited by Gandhi and ML King as influential in their thoughts. He was elected to Parliament in 1829, in which he had to be re-elected and later the first Lord Mayor of Dublin who was Catholic in over 200 years. There is a monument erected in his memory in Dublin. When he died he had his heart buried in Rome and his body buried in Dublin. Fine clean copy. Bookseller Inventory # 12145
