circa.1860. Original carte-de-visite photograph (2 1/2 x 3 3/4 inch) of Mr. Cobden seated with his hand on a book. Richard Cobden (1804-1865) was a Manchester calico manufacturer and Radical and Liberal statesman associated with John Bright in the formation of the Anti-Corn Law League. A champion of free trade and peace, he led the passage of the Anti-Corn Law and fought for free trade in Parliament. He was highly thought of in England and on the continent.
