Description:

George Bickham was the eighteenth century's most famous writing master and engraver. "The Universal Penman" was a collection of fine calligraphy pages to study and try to copy to improve penmanship. Originally published in parts & book form between 1733 and 1741. This is a single engraving on hand made paper with watermark, some minor dirt/edge staining, engraved area mostly very good, there is a crease at base in paper (made during the paper making process). This example is engraved at top To M. Geo. Bickham, at base J. Champion & August 8, 1733 (i.e. did the calligraphy). It states in engraving that Joseph Champion is grateful for George Bickham in letting him assist in writing some part of your new copy book and that George Bickham engraved for his late celebrated Master, Mr. Charles Snell. I believe engraved by George Bickam for Bickam's 1733 publication. 25 x 40.5cm Approx. Bookseller Inventory #
