4 x 5 inch original "beefcake" physique photograph by Don Whitman, founder of the Western Photography Guild. Though undated, the photograph likely dates ca. 1947, at the beginning of the WPG before the single-digit postal code was implemented into the WPG stamp. It certainly dates from before the 1968 repeal of the ban on mailing nude photographs (which the WPG avoided by strategically placing a modesty cloth over the model's groin). In addition to their provocative subjects, Whitman's photographs were also unique for their use of the natural Colorado scenery, often posing models on rocks, trees, or against expansive vistas. The photograph is stamped on the verso with the series, number, and WPG mark, as well as the model's name in pencil. Unlike the majority of Whitman's photographs, this portrait shows the model clothed with a pensive look on his face. Unfortunately, there is light chipping to the left border and a chip at the upper edge, approximately a quarter by a half inch in size, though these defects do not affect the image. An unusual example of Whitman's work. Bookseller Inventory #
