4 x 5 inch original "beefcake" physique photograph by Don Whitman, founder of the Western Photography Guild. Though undated, the photograph is likely ca. 1950s, when the single-digit postal code was implemented into the WPG stamp. It certainly dates from before the 1968 repeal of the ban on mailing nude photographs (which the WPG avoided by strategically placing a modesty cloth over the model's groin). In addition to their provocative subjects, Whitman's photographs were also unique for their use of the natural Colorado scenery, often posing models on rocks, trees, or against expansive vistas. The photograph is stamped on the verso with a WPG mark including "Denver 1" and the series number. In excellent condition, a nice studio example of Whitman's legendary photography with delicate cast shadow. Bookseller Inventory #
