About this Item

6 1/2 x 9 1/4 sepia photograph portrait mounted on 9 x 13 brown cardstock. Portrait of a distinguished gentleman in full Navy dress uniform, holding hat, 3/4 length, facing to his left. Under portrait, subject has inscribed, "Yours Sincerely, Wm. Hemsley Emory, Rear Admiral, U. S. N. United States Atlantic Fleet, Worlds Cruise of 1908." William Hemsley Emory (1846-1917) was the son William Hemsley Emory (1811-1887), US Army Brigadier General and Surveyor of Texas. During his 56 year career in the US Navy, the younger Emory served in Asia, Europe and the Atlantic. He commanded the USS Yosemite during the Spanish-American War, and acted as Naval Attache to England for 4 years. His final assignment before retirement was Commander of the 2nd Division, North Atlantic Fleet, during the first portion of the World Cruise of the "Great White Fleet" in 1908. President Theodore Roosevelt ordered a world cruise of the U. S. Navy fleet from 1907-1909 as a way to show the world that the United States had become a naval power. Rear Admiral Emory retired in 1908, and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery upon his death in 1917. Bookseller Inventory # 016489
