circa.1970s. Eight page clean typescript (no corrections) signed "D.K. Slayton." Donald K. Slayton (1924-1993) was from Sparta, Wisconsin and was one of the original NASA Mercury Seven astronauts. Beginning his military career in 1942 in the Army Air Force and was a bomber pilot in Europe and Japan during the war. Called up during the Korean Crisis after gaining a Aeronautical engineering degree from the University of Minnesota, Slayton was a test pilot at Edwards Air Force Base in California. Accepted as one of the original astronauts by the United States he was scheduled to fly Mercury 7, but a heart problem was detected and he moved over to civilian duty with NASA as director of flight operations, 1963-1971. In 1975 he was allowed to serve as module pilot on the 'Apollo-Soyez Text Project'. Retired in 1982 he helped found Space Services Inc. which launched the first private payload into space. He was the author of several books, including DEKE! US MANNED SPACE FROM MERCURY TO THE SHUTTLE. The eight page paper is concerned with the role of self education on the part of the astronauts while training for their missions in space. He goes into the extra education that was undertaken to enable the understanding of space travel and the science behind it. The engineering involved in constructing and operating the missiles and rockets had to be understood and mastered in order for the astronauts to carry out their missions. The paper finishes with a discussion of the role of practice and simulation at a more intense and higher level than they expected in the actual missions. Interesting for understanding the role self education and preparation played in their carrying out the assigned mission. Bookseller Inventory # 12171
