About this Item

Originally published by Simon & Schuster in 1942, Many Happy Returns! is GrouchoÕs comic look at the problems of income tax. In the mid-1950Õs Groucho wanted to reissue the book and expand and update it. To that end Groucho wrote entire new chapters to be added, new sections to replace parts of the old edition, and new inserts to earlier sections. The new edition never came to fruition, and present here are the 43 pages of original manuscript material with occasional hand-corrections by Groucho which he wrote and when added to the text of the earlier published edition would constitute the new book. The chapters and new sequences have instructions from Groucho where they are to be inserted in the earlier published text. Some of the new chapters are entitled ÒThe Author Is InvestigatedÓ, ÒCollapsible CorporationsÓ, ÒWarning To Rich Cats and DogsÓ, ÒThe New Television-Deep Freeze TaxÓ, ÒThe Marx Tax PlanÓ, ÒHow To Keep A DiaryÓ which upon a current reading has some very hilarious Groucho humor, all of which has never been seen before. Also present is the original printed Simon & Schuster envelope postmarked April 2, 1956 addressed to Groucho in Beverly Hills in which the manuscript was returned. Accompanying is a first edition in dust jacket of the 1942 Many Happy Returns. This is a terrific find containing a remarkable amount of original unpublished writing by one of AmericaÕs greatest comedians. Enclosed together in a handsome morocco and cloth clamshell box.
