About this Item

This a bound printing of the first volume of the early Georgia (1842) literary magazine, The Orion, published by William C. Richards in Penfield. The first 6 issues of this magazine, (March, May, June, July, August and September) has been bound, at some later date, in a deep green cloth with gilt titles on spine. The bindingis VG+, but the heavily toned interior pages are G. All of the magazine pages are included. The original front wrap, which states Volume I, is also bound in, That this wrap does not indicate a specific monthly issue and that the interior pages are numbered consecutively, I am assuming that it was designed for the publication of all six issues together. The individual issues all start with a title page containg the date of the issue and the number. There is an Index in the rear that has been stabilized with a rice paper overlay. Before the front wrap on the interior, there is a plate of Tallulah Fall by T. Addison Richards. Book is square and binding secure. ; B&W Frontispiece; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 396 +Index pages; There is a chapter on The Orion in Flanders' Early Georgia Magazines which notes that The Orion was published only from 1842 to 1844. DeRenne did not have a complete set and all issues are difficult to find. The magazine featured many early Georgia and Southern writers including William Gilmore Simms, Richard Henry Wilde, Henry Rootes Jackson, Thomas Holley Chivers and many others. William C. Richards' commentary in each issue is an especially interesting and trenchant view of Georgia writers in the antebellum period. DeRenne II 484. Georgiana 33n.bought from GW 8.16.
