About this Item

SIGNED in black ink at the half title page by Ornette Coleman. The ticket for the concert at which the signature was obtained is laid in, dated Wed. Sept. 26, 2007 for a performance at Royce Hall, UCLA , as part of the university's Alive! Concert Series; also laid is a 4" by 6" coloured photograph of Ornette taken at the signing. In quarter bound blue cloth with black paper boards, hint of spotting to top edge, else fine, in a like dust jacket, unclipped, now in a mylar sleeve. For more than fifty years, Ornette Coleman (born 1930), has astonished, delighted and infuriated his audiences in creating some of the most daring and innovative music of our time. He is now rightly considered, with Armstrong and Parker, one of the great "architects" of jazz who has radically changed the way we listen to it. Still flourishing in his eighties, Coleman has only recently received some of the honours due him, among them, in 2007, a Pulitzer Prize for his recording Sound Grammar and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. This is the first comprehensive biography of the great saxophonist and composer by free jazz critic and scholar, Litweiler, who is also the author of The Freedom Principal: Jazz After 1958. The book is a vivid portrait of Coleman's brilliant and controversial career in its many incarnations, which makes extensive use of unpublished interviews, detailed and insightful musical analysis and includes a comprehensive discography. Given his reputedly retiring and reticent nature and advanced age, Coleman autographs are increasingly uncommon and book signatures, very scarce. An uncommon jazz collectible in fine condition.
