Publisher's original half gray calf, lettered in silver on the spine over gray cloth, pictorial endpapers (with six unique images), facsimiles of all 21 original wrappers bound in place, all three volumes are in the original shipping boxes as issued by the publisher, folio (14.4 x 10.5 inches; 370-260 mm). This fine facsimile was limited to 500 numbered copies, this is no. 430. These volumes are numbers 5, 7 and 9 in the Facsimile Limited Edition series and from the S. A. White Collection. The first edition of this work was privately printed in Brisbane from 1866-1870. Samuel White and his brother provided the field descriptions of the birds and some watercolor illustrations of the birds. Diggles and his niece, H. G. Eaton, produced the fine hand-colored plates and utilized White's notes in the descriptive text leaf for each color plate. The exact number of copies of the first printing is unknown but the set only had 92 recorded subscribers. The 126 color plates illustrating 244 Australian birds are extraordinary works of art. The work was intended as an accurate and useful book of reference for those who could not afford or have access to Gould's 'The Birds of Australia.' Diggles work was brought to a premature close by a commercial crisis that caused the withdrawal of many subscribers (from Sotheby's Bradley Martin sale, (1989, entry 73). No ownership marks and no signs of use. A fine (new) set in the original shipping boxes. Bookseller Inventory # 4984
