About this Item

First Impression of the novel that established Carey's international reputation when it won the (Man) Booker Prize and the Miles Franklin Award. 8vo: [14],512pp. Publisher's French blue cloth, spine stamped in white; illustrated dust jacket, priced £10.95. Signed (not Inscribed) by Carey on title page. Fine, apparently unread copy (top edge with hint of spotting); Fine jacket, virtually pristine. Carey also won the Booker Prize for True History of the Kelly Gang, in 2001. Only J. M. Coetzee and Hilary Mantel have taken the prize twice as well. Oscar and Lucinda, filmed by Gillian Armstrong, tells the story of Oscar Hopkins, Cornish son of a Plymouth Brethren minister, and Lucinda Leplastrier, a young Australian heiress who buys a glass factory. They meet on a ship to Australia and discover that they are both gamblers, one obsessive, the other compulsive. Lucinda bets Oscar that he cannot transport a glass church from Sydney to a remote settlement at Bellingen, some 400 km up the New South Wales coast. The bet changes both their lives forever, as Carey's historical novel "exposes the hidden history of Australia's colonial encounter through an endearingly eccentric love story . . . It is still probably Carey's most successful and popular novel." (Literary Encyclopedia) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. Bookseller Inventory # BB1417
