About this Item

The present book is the first comprehensive study of the problems connected with the history, art and archaeology of Osian, a well-known pilgrimage and art centre of Western India, regarded as the cradle of the Oswals. A veritable cultural oasis in the Thar desert, Osian can well be compared with Khajuraho and Bhuvaneshwar. Irrefragable new evidence has been brought to light by the author to prove its existence as early as circa third-fourth century A.D. Traditions regarding its association with the Oswals and the true nature of their tutelary deity Saciya Mata have been analysed in the light of historico- archaeological evidence and while it has been established that the Oswals owe their origin to this place, Saciya Mata has been found to be only the ferocious non-vegetarian Hindu goddess Mahishasuramardini who, with the conversion of the laity to jainism, was also reconsecrated as a Sattvika devi It is for the first time that a detailed description of all the temples has been presented here in all possible minutiae. The painstaking researches of the author have led him to show that the celebrated Mahavira Temple was originally dedicated to the 23rd Jaina pontiff Parsvanatha. The popular belief that it was constructed during the reign of The Pratihara emperor Vatsaraja has also been disproved. The chronology of all the temples has been determined on the evidence of their architectural peculiarities and epigraphs found on them. Again it is for the first time that the rich sculptural wealth of Osian is presented here selecting numerous artistically superb and iconographically interesting examples, both from Hindu and Jaina temples. The book also presents an account of one hundred epigraphs many of which have been discovered by the author himself. The evidence thereof has been utilized in the reconstruction of the history of the sites and its various fanes. Other remains like the step-wells, foot-prints, Govardhana pillars, coins etc , too, have received due attention. How the relics present a picturesque panorama of the life of the people for about half a millennium from c A.D. 700 onwards is illustrated with the help of 171 plates and 17 figures comprising more than two hundred line-drawings.
