About this Item

Line engraving. A fine copy of this early image of a Thoroughbred race-horse by Seymour, one of the great early equestrian artists. Seymour was one of the first British field sport artists. His rough, direct portrayals suggest an artist schooled by experience, which was the case, according to Siltzer, who wrote, he "only took to art to make a living after a short but unfortunate career on the Turf." (Siltzer, p. 245) There is an appealing lack of refinement in Seymour's work. His work was done during the early days of British horse racing. Not in Siltzer; not in Mellon Collection.
