About this title
Fictional vignettes provide facts about three species of otters, which live in rivers, lakes, or along the coast, and which are declining in number. From School Library Journal:
Grade 3-5-- Bailey uses a series of fictional anecdotes to personalize and dramatize the plight of these endangered species. The vignettes are interspersed with factual information about the animals and their threatened survival in the wild. An unusual aspect of her discussion in Save the Macaws is the exploration of the economic motivation of the native people of the rain forest to become involved in the poaching of rare birds. She presents both sides of this ecological dilemma nonjudgmentally. Both titles combine full-color photographs with watercolor drawings, fact with fictionalized dialogue, and episodes to make these accounts easier for children to understand. --Eva Elisabeth Von Ancken, Trinity Pawling School, NY
