About this Item

Large quarto in dark green cloth hardcovers. Front cover titling "Plans for an Auxiliary Supply of Pure Water, under pressure to the Cities of New York and Brooklyn". (2), title, color tinted plate "View of the Mountains, Lakes , Rivers and Streams in Rockland and Orange Counties, in the State of New York, And Bergen, Passaic and Morris Counties in the State of New Jersey. All Lying in the Passaic Water-Shed"; iv (contents), color tinted map of the Croton and Passaic Watersheds", A-D (letter to the Commissioners of the Sinking Fund of the City of New York regarding the project; 117 pp. with addendum slip tipped in at p. 67; large tinted folding plate "Profile Map of Pipe Line from Great Notch Reservoir to New York" at rear; eight full page monochrome photographic plates of various falls, rivers and lakes in th region(Little Falls, Ramapo, Hopatcong, etc); four additional tinted engraved views of tunnel construction. (Note: the "Large Map of Croton and Passaic Water-sheds' called for in the list of illustrations was never published being thought duplicative of the plate already present after p. iv.) Generally very good, covers somewhat rubbed and lettering dulled, couple worn spots along the spine and head and foot of spine strip; the large rear plate is unevenly folded and has some shallow top edge toning and chipping. Withal, a very acceptable exmaple of a very scarce and important New York City-related book, a plan to deliver fifty million gallons of water to the lower part of New York City and Brooklyn via a tunnel under the Hudson River. The text portions contain statements form the Health Department, Sanitary Commission, legal opinions from New York and New Jersey (one of which was that New Jersey owned no rights to water in the Passaic watershed and could acquire such only under eminent domain), various financial issues, a military point of view expressed by among others General Phil Sheridan, etc. Bookseller Inventory # E15113
