Colour-printed lithograph, mounted on card. Very good condition apart from a 3/4" loss in the right margin. Frederic Cozzens was one of America's greatest marine artists. Like nearly every other great marine artist, he was thoroughly acquainted with every aspect of ship construction and the art of sailing. He is best known for his paintings of great American yachts of the latter half of the 19th century, which were commissioned by many of New York's leading yachtsmen. In 1884, he expanded his audience by making a series of lithographs of his paintings. The first and most brilliant series was American Yachts, Their Clubs and Races from which this print comes. Over the Cape May Course depicts a tense moment during the Regatta of 1873 in which the schooners Clio, Enchantress, Dreadnaught , the working schooners Sharpshooter and Reindeer , and the pilotboat Negus race neck and neck down the Cape May Course, south of the Jersey shallows. Beginning off Owl's Head, New York Harbour, continuing around the lightship in the Five Fathoms Bank off Cape May, New Jersey, and finishing at the Sandy Hook lightship, the Regatta was a spirited 300 mile race from which the Enchantress emerged victorious.
