About this Item

This is a unique copy of an important, informative book -- perhaps the best ever account of the fabled Pony Express, by a veteran rider. Howes 434, Graff 3562, Six-Guns 1897, "The original is very rare and is considered the standard history of the early stage lines. It has some information on stagecoach robberies, Wild Bill Hickok, and Joseph Slade"; detailed references to Utah and the Mormon expedition of 1847. Folding map depicts the lines of the Great Overland Stage Route, the Santa Fe Trail, Butterfield Overland and Dispatch, the Mormon Route of 1847. Light brown cloth stamped in black, gilt lettering. Profusely illustrated with period photographs, reproductions of drawings. Very good plus, binding clean and tight, pages intact, all lettering clear. Minor staining to exterior, foxing to frontis/title, light foxing to eps. 1906 ink ownership of F. C. Young (Denver). Howes R434. Ffep signed and inscribed "Sincerely and truly yours, Frank A. Root, the author." Root was a messenger in charge of the Express, and an agent of the post office department on the Great Stage Line to California. He claimed in a separate letter, "For nearly seventy years I re-sided in Kansas and the Rocky Mountains. I crossed the Great Plains 32 times back and forth in the early 60's before Kansas or Nebraska had a railroad in operation." He contends that although the name of W. E. Connelley appears as a co-author, Connelley never wrote any of the text, but merely received a third interest in the book for assisting in finding a publisher to print it. This is an absorbing book: I know of only one other copy actually signed by Root. Bookseller Inventory # 121215
