About this Item

4 1/2" x 4" original photograph of what was called Frank Murphy's "impossible railroad". He had already managed the rich Congress Mine and the legendary United Verde Mine at Jerome. Now in 1897 his Prescott and Eastern Line was organized with full grading beginning in 1898. Since it would connect with the Santa Fe, Prescott and Phoenix Railway (just north of Granite Dells) it would start at what is called the P & E Junction at what was called previously the "Point of Rocks", an area where wagon trains and stage coaches had caused travelers to fear. Since the work was difficult to find workers, the local sheriff would use prisoners for which they would receive pay. The photograph here also has an advertisement which reads on a the rock to the left: "Go to Star Lodging House Phoenix". This photograph shows the first small but major station on the route. Short closed eade tear to upper edge. Bookseller Inventory # 016903
