The complete set includes reproductions of all his paintings, a critical introduction to his work, biographical notes, selected criticism, a bibliography and a complete listing of his works by location. For centuries after the death of Sandro Botticelli the world took little notice of him; but today, rediscovered by late nineteenth~century English critics, he is considered among the most important figures of the Italian Renaissance. Influenced by his teacher Fra Lippo Lippi, but more emotional than the older painter, Botticelli combined the traditional clear pattern of pure plastic and linear rhythms with his own intensely personal pictorial language. His ability to transform nature and narrative into myth and allegory has placed him in the first ranks of the great artists of all centuries. Included in this set are the early Madonnas as well as the Discovery of the Murder of Holofernes and the first Adoration of the Magi, which clearly show the influence of Fra Lippo Lippi.Roberto Salvini has discussed the first half of Botticelli's life and work in the critical introduction of the first volume. Volume 2 contains the reproductions of the culminating works of that first period. Here in these paintings of the late 1470s and early 1480s we see the full development of Botticelli's genius. This period~his humanist phase~brought forth such masterworks as the Primavera, which symbolizes the ideal harmonious balance of nature and civilization. In this period, too, he began painting on a monumental scale with the frescoes in the Sistine Chapel depicting The Life of Moses and The Temptation of Christ. After Botticelli had been in Rome in 1481~82 to paint the frescoes in the Sistine Chapel, the artist returned to Florence and, as Professor Salvini shows, began another great phase in his development. The third of four volumes on Botticelli in The Complete Library of World Art includes the Birth of Venus, painted in 1485. With the spiritual crisis the artist underwent during the period Savonarola held sway over Florence, Botticelli began a series of religious paintings that culminate in the powerful and mysterious, even mystical, late works which bring to a close Professor Salvini's study of the artist's entire, authentic oeuvre.
