About this Item

Gouache on paper: "Vedute di Pozzuoli" signed l. l. "Camillo de Vito pinx"; "Grotta del Cane" signed l.r. "Chas. Glass Naples." These two Neapolitan School gouache paintings from the first half of the 19th century exemplify the happy vibrancy of this school of painting, in which the rich, warm Italian skies play a major role, along with lush vegetation and blue seas. In the View of Pozzuoli, de Vito displays in the foreground a shepherd with a long staff speaking to a woman and daughter, all are dressed in native costume. Down the cove, the town of Pozzuoli sits serenely beneath the late afternoon sun. In "Grotta del Cane", also near Naples, a story is told. A man is walking away from the cave with an unconscious dog. This is because the Grotta del Cane (Cave of Dogs) is noted for an odd phenomenon. Being a volcanic region, the cave in question has an excess of carbon dioxide, which, being heavier than oxygen, sinks downward. Humans are not affected, but dogs are, Apparently, the dog revived when brought back into a normal atmosphere. The story of the dog is incidental to the colorful landscape with the Bay in the background and the soft blue sky and pink clouds above the odd granite hill the grotto occupies.
