Panoramic photograph, 8 x 26 1/4 inches. Light central crease, other minor creases, staple holes, and paper defects in blank margins, small closed tears to right and bottom edges. Very good. This panoramic photograph depicts the approximately 300 members of Company F of the 1321st Engineer General Service Regiment standing and seated in several rows along a newly built wooden bridge, with the Company's white officers seated front and center. The Company's flag is held by two men in the back row, and a sign can be seen beneath one of the officer's legs which reads "Bridge constructed by Co. "F". 1944". This photo was most likely taken while Company F was completing field training in South Carolina. The 1321st Engineer General Service Regiment was one of fifty African-American Engineer regiments established by the U.S. Army during World War II. Completing their training in Tennessee and South Carolina, the 1321st deployed to Europe on the 7th of October, 1944. While there, they built bridges and repaired roads in Britain and France before providing support for units in active combat zones in Germany. After crossing the Rhine, the engineers worked rebuilding bridges and roads along the autobahn before being transferred to Okinawa in the Pacific theatre. The U.S. Army was still segregated throughout World War II, and a large portion of the Corps of Engineers was made up of African-American units: 42% of all engineer units were African American, even though they accounted for only 8.6% of the Army's total enlisted manpower.
