GILPIN. VOLUME I. i-lii, 1-582, i-xxi pages. Hardcover: H 23.5cm x L 14.75cm. Original handsome full brown leather, moisture staining to boards with scuffing along edges and light wear to corners, spine decorated with four raised bands and flaked thin gilt stamped horizontal bars, two spine compartments retain reasonably bright gilt stamped lettering, rubbed and dulled gilt tooling along board edges. Toning and small stains to edges. Marbled endpapers predominately patterned with varying brown shades interspersed with streaks of blue, pink, and yellow. Modern blue ink signature at front flyleaf's top right corner. Light to mild foxing and occasional soiling to interior leaves. Still a handsome very good- antiquarian copy and a quite uncommon mid-19th century Mobile, Alabama imprint. James Madison's papers were published under the auspices of U.S. Attorney General Henry D.
