First edition, from the Library of Entertaining Knowledge. This is Vol I of the two volumes issued on Paris. It is complete unto itself as Vol II covered the Revolution of 1830 exclusively. With two engraved plates, two full page engraved illustrations and 6 illustrations within the text. Small 8vo, contemporary marbled boards backed in brown calf and with small calf corner pieces, the spine with small remnant of a morocco label and with ruling in gilt. v, 385 pp. A very good copy. Internally quite well preserved for an American book of the period with only a small amount of spotting or very light toning. The binding is in fully original state, the upper hinge detached, the text complete and with full plate count though the map is not bound into this copy. A VERY EARLY AMERICAN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY, describing the more remarkable edifices and situations in the French capital in association with historical events. This volume begins with the first mention of Paris in the Commentaries of Julius Caesar and ends in the late 1820s. Bookseller Inventory # 26187
