Eighteen Volumes + Plates. The first Vols 1-15 (around 800 pages each) are in their original full leather bindings; some rubbed and dry; a few with slight leather loss. Vols 16-18 are in six parts; uncut and deckle edged; in their original printed boards; paper spines mostly perished. + Plus there are three Plate Volumes bound in a similar way. Over 500 engraved plates. A few plates may be missing or in poor condition. 4to. 280 mm. Double Column. Foxed. Sir David Brewster (1781-1868) was a Scottish physicist, mathematician, astronomer, inventor, and writer. In 1807, he undertook the editorship of the newly projected Edinburgh Encyclopaedia, of which the first part appeared in 1808, and the last not until 1830. The work was strongest in the scientific department, and many of its most valuable articles were from the Brewster's pen. The parts issue is very rare. In the U.S. it was published in 36 parts (1812- 1831). The best American engravers were engaged for the work. The set bears the bookplate and family records of Theodore B. Appel (1823-1907), a prominent Lancaster, PA physician, historian, and author, who also served as Secretary of Health in Pennsylvania. S&S / AI 24929; Rink.
