About this Item

103 pages, with 103 illustrations in b&w. "Dynamic symmetry is an ancient Greek term meaning commensurable in power, particularly the second power or square of a number. The term was used to describe the lines which constitute the sides of rectangles bearing a square-root relationship with their ends. These side and end lines are incommensurable (asymmetrical), but the square on them are commensurable (symmetrical). The term seems to have been an invention of the early Greeks as it appears in the most ancient fragment of their geometry which has survived. Mr. Hambidge presents in detail the evidence on which he bases his theory that the Parthenon was designed in accordance with the principles of proportion called by him "Dynamic Symmetry."
