We follow Pell, a nine-year-old boy, through his summer vacation. Pell finds plenty of activities and adventures to keep him busy all summer long. His explorations in the vast woods that borders his home, the new experience of raising chickens, going out on the bay with his grandfather in his oyster boat and frog hunting, are but a few of the things that weave their way into his daily activities and into the chapters of this book. Along the way we see the values that Pell is picking up as he deals many situations and which are based on the examples his parents and family members have made on him. The story also shows that coming from a modest background does not limit your curiosity and ability to have fun and find things to do in even in limited surroundings. We see how Pell interrelates with both children of his own age, and adults, as well. Although the time period is not recent, youll see that the interest of children has changed little. About the Author:

J. B. Hayes was born and raised on New York's Long Island. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and afterwards forged a successful career as a banker. Always a talented artist and writer, Mr. Hayes took early retirement from banking and devoted himself to a variety of pursuits that allow him the flexibility to pursue his interests and passions, foremost of which is writing. Mr. Hayes still lives on Long Island with his wife, Lyn."Pell is one of my many stories that I think young people will enjoy," said Mr. Hayes. "It's not magical or fancy; just the life of a young boy of modest means. PC's and iPods hadn't come along yet, and his family probably couldn't afford them if they had. It's a different time, but I wonder if the feelings of boys and girls growing up have changed all that much. Pell proves that you can have an interesting and adventurous life using your own imagination and abilities without all the gadgetry. You'll follow him, through his eyes, as new experiences and challenges present themselves." When asked if there are future Pell books planned, Mr. Hayes said that that is his intention and that follow-up Pell books are in the offing.
