About this Item

FIRST EDITION. 8vo., pp. x, 3-169. Wood engravings on title page and at the head of each essay by the famous English artist Reynolds Stone. Original green cloth a little light stained o/w sound/VERY GOOD. Interior clean/FINE. Dust jacket designed by F. Quilter frayed and torn on edges but attractive and o/w sound/GOOD. Some people have felt that Perseus in the Wind is Freya Stark's best book, but it is one very different from her usual travel writing. It is her eighth book, coming after such well-known classics as A Winter in Arabia and Baghdad Sketches, and shows Freya Stark in her most reflective and philosophical mood. Much like Francis Bacon's Essays of the late 16th century, it is a collection of 20 essays on such diverse subjects as Happiness, Education, Beauty, Death, Love and Sorrow, and also Travel. These are accompanied by a Foreword and an Epilogue. Despite the various themes there are also many insights into her traveller's mind and character. Her description of the Persian mountains of Elburz in the Foreword is particularly fine and perhaps does indeed account for the book's popularity with many Freya Stark devotees. Store Description

We specialise in travel, adventure and exploration books published between about 1900 and 1960, loosely referred to as post-imperialist travel writing. Although most books are the first-hand experiences of their authors, we have included books of general interest about a particular area or incident and autobiographies and biographies by and of famous travellers or adventurers. You will also find some books we consider of particular merit outside our somewhat arbitrary date range. Mark Culme-Seymour Proprietor
