16mo. (18 cm.) [8]1-267p. Green cloth over cream colored cloth with gilt letters on the front cover and the spine. Top edge gilt. Cream colored cloth heavily decorated with gilt leaf and vine design. Laid in is a small four-panel advertising brochure from Thomas Y. Crowell listing several other books written by Miller and with a small black and white photo of Miller on the front panel. Very minor wear to extremities, cloth very lightly soiled, paper starting to turn as usual, gift inscription in pencil dated 1897, gilt bright, else very good to near fine with no internal markings. This little volume discussed the humanity of Jesus, including his friendships with numerous individuals: his mother Mary, John the Baptist, the Beloved Disciple, Peter, Thomas, Mary of Bethany, Martha, and his "secret friends": Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. Born in Frankfort Springs, PA, in 1840. J.R. Miller became a notable Presbyterian minister, popular Christian author and Editorial Superintendent of the Presbyterian Board of Publications, as well as pastor of several Presbyterian churches, including, Bethany (Philadelphia), New Broadway (Rock Island, IL), and St. Paul (West Philadelphia). He was the author of countless books on the religious life, among them the well-known IN HIS STEPS (1885). Bookseller Inventory # 005852
