Published on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of the publication of his landmark debut collection, "Portraits In Life And Death" (1976), one of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. Presents Peter Hujar's "Animals And Nudes. A triumphant achievement. "Unsurpassed (and unsurpassable) male and female nudes as well as portraits of animals that are, collectively, among the finest ever taken in the history of photography. Hujar kept alive the tradition of masterful touch in photography, but reinvented traditional subject matter with his stunning conjunction of aesthetic restraint and emotional openness. He could identify with the animals he photographed to the point of thinking he was creating a self-portrait without irony or sentimentality. And few have seen deeper into the mortality of the nude, whether with joy, arousal, or tribulation, or shifting shades of all three" (Klauss Kertess). The reason Hujar's photographs are sublime is that he did not see his work as being about a subject other than himself, not out of vanity but on the contrary, in all his vulnerability. His portraits are self-portraits, which express and transcend his own body and milieu at the same time, and therefore have the purity and timeless quality that people often refer to when they speak of his work. We are all born naked, and remain so all our lives, despite being clothed physically and by convention. As such, his book should really be called "Animals And Other Nudes". An absolute "must-have" title for Peter Hujar collectors. This title is now collectible. This is one of few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A scarce copy thus. 70 duotone plates. One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER PETER HUJAR TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0944092950. Bookseller Inventory # 14367
Synopsis: When Peter Hujar (1934-1987) died at the age of 53, his remarkable oeuvre fell into neglect. Sporadic exhibitions and catalogues failed to give Hujar his critical due, or to make the work widely accessible. Now, on the twenty-fifth anniversary of the publication of his first book, Portraits in Life and Death (1976), a concerted effort to exhibit and publish Hujar's work has begun. This book is a prelude to upcoming exhibitions examining Hujar's incomparable portraits of animals and nudes, all of which he though to be self-portraits. A student of Lisette Model, admirer of August Sander, and friend of Diane Arbus, Hujar made his photographs distinctly his own: a perfect and unmistakable mirror of his own body and mileau.
