About this Item

Small Octavo, navy cloth-covered boards, measuring 9.25" x 6.25", gilt lettering to front board, and gilt design and lettering, ruled, to spine. Previous owner's inscription front free endpaper. Color frontis, and numerous black and white illustrations throughout. Tideline to bottom edge and rippling to bottom edge of text block, throughout. Marryat was a British naval officer who wrote both nonfiction and fiction and whose works -- among the pioneering tales of life at sea, inspired and "served as models for later works by C.S. Forester and Patrick O'Brian. Perhaps in sharp distinction from mere on-board nautical tales, Frederick Marryat's novels were as much concerned with social status and rising through the naval and societal ranks, as actual life on the high seas. In this novel, originally written in 1834, young Simple is considered "the fool of the family", and the book follows his maturation, not without the significantassistance and influence of a seasoned seaman, who serves as his unofficial mentor.
