Philadelphia 1828 Carey, Lea & Carey. Curiously written in nearly a narrative form and full of fascinating tidbits about ordinary life in early 19th century. Here are the subtitles for Chapter 3, for example: On Gravitation, Weight, Velocity of Falling Bodies, At What Altitude a Body Would Lose its Gravity,The Tower of Babel, The Known Velocity of Sound, An Experiment to Ascertain Depth, An Unwelcome Visitor, The Mysterious Sisterhood, An Incantation Scene, A Visit to the Vicarage, The Magic Gallery, Return to the Lodge. Chapters on marbles, popguns, the Kite, ancient music, thaumatrope, optical illusions, the Swing. Two volumes. Hardcovers. 12mo., 321pp., 351pp., a few small line drawings, red leather with marbled boards. Owner signed on title page ("Presented to Martha D. Smith by her affectionate cousin M. B Chamberlayne, April 12, 1831"). No other ownership marks. Good, covers very worn, spines chipped on ends, hinges cracked or cracking, about 50 pages in Volume 2 have crushed spot at very edge (not at all near text itself.) Text blocks bound securely.
