About this Item

Folio. 1860s-1880s. Full dark full morocco, ruled borders, monogrammed on the front cover. Re-backed professionally with original spine laid down, new dark green moiré patterned end papers. All edges gilt. Most prints are un-faded with good chocolate tones. Some trivial fading to a few photographs, and fading to a few others. Mounts clean. Album size: 17" x 20.2". Mounts are 16" x 18". Photographs vary between 8.5"x 11.5" or 7.5" x 12". Twenty-one photographs are signed and numbered by Bourne in the negative. The other images of northern India are known to be by or attributed to Samuel Bourne. Using the wet plate collodion process, Samuel Bourne took several thousand photographs on three arduous photographic expeditions to Northern India. Photographs of Western India after 1870 are by Colin Murray, seeing as Bourne had returned to England in 1870 and was not known to have traveled in the region. With Bournes departure, Sheperd resumed duties with the firm primarily as a printer until his departure in 1885, transferring operations to Murray. The six images of Ceylon in the album are presumed to arise from Bourne's collaboration with Charles Shepherd who is better known for his images of Ceylon. All images are captioned in ink on the mount in the same unknown hand. Photographs appear in the following sequence: (Copper Mines on the River Teesta, Darjeeling); (Cane bridge on the Teesta River leading into Bhootan); (Bunderpoonch, 20,758 Feet Above Barsso. Jummootri[?]); (The Ganges at Derali); (Small temples on the Ganges at Derali); (Sodee Tal [?] Jummotri, A lake seldom visited by travellers); (Twig Jhula Bridge on the Chenab, Kashmir); (View on the Kashmir Road near Budrawar); (View on the Canal. Kashmir); (The "Duke", the largest Elephant caught at the Kraal); (Moonshee Bagh Commissioner's Boat, Kashmir); (View Down the Jhelum, Kashmir); (Scinde Valley Glaciers); (View from the Thibet Road at Pangi. The great Chini Peaks in the background); (Group of Kashmir Females); (Wooded Valley from Fuladam Srikanta peaks in the distance); (Village of Mokba on the Ganges, Bandarpoonch in the distance); (The Source of the Ganges, Ice Cave at the foot of the Glacier); (A shooting party in Camp, Srinnggur, Kashmir); (Hindoo Fakeer: A native of Nepaul); (The Ganges at Gangootri); (Curious gravel formations on the Lagudarsi Stream, Spiti); (Contorted Strata at Losar, Spiti); (A Prince, wives and attendants); (Keep of the Botanical Gardens from "Lambsknowe," Neilgherrie); (Kandyan Ladies, Ceylon); (Three smaller Gopurums, Trichinopoly); (The Great Pagoda and Stone Wall, Tanjore); (The Great Pagoda from the ramparts, Tanjore); (Mundapum with facade of stone horses, Trichinopoly); (Group of Nautch Girls & musicians, Kashmir); (Village Life in Bengal); (Church, Court-house, and Library, Ootacamund); (Buddhist caves near Monlmein); (Reversing Station. Bhore Ghat Railway); (Fernery at Gangarana); (The Chief of the Temple. Kandy, Ceylon); (Jhtuba [?] Ceylon); (The Great Hindoo Temple. Colombo. Ceylon); (India-rubber Trees.
