Description:

Hardcover: H 15.5cm x L 13.5cm. Antiquarian photograph album or dark brown leather boards each bordered by black leather beveled-edge raised squares and rectangles with bright gilt stamping, each board's four raised corner squares additionally decorated with a faux-pearl bead although bead is missing for left lower corner of rear board. Features two intact ribbon buckle motif brass clasps spanning across fore-edge anchored upon the each board's edge; part of upper clasp's ribbon is bent slightly upward and no longer adhered to the brass plate. Still a fairly firm binding although spine leather has cosmetic surface creases lengthwise, strong scuffing along front joint with lighter abrasion along rear joint, tears at joint heads and heels with slender leather loss along 4cm tear at head of front joint, spine's gilt stamping remains bright. All three bright gilt edges feature stamped floral motif. White silk cloth pastedowns; small green binder-bookseller style ticket noting "Book cover, patented July 5th, 1864, October 17th, 1865." affixed at front pastedown's top right corner. Browning to color decorated title page followed by two leaves for an owner's index (unmarked) and promotional text regarding the patents and sturdy construction of the album. PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL PHOTOGRAPHIC IMAGES HAVE BEEN REMOVED. All 25 thick photograph-holding leaves present but some foxing and soiling to paper; leaves' image holders are either rectangular shaped with arched tops or oval shaped. William Harding was a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania manufacturer and retailer of photograph albums from perhaps as early as 1853 to at least 1872. Harding's address is provided in the album as 326 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia which dates the album as contemporary to the 1865 patent date promoted upon the spine heel and the July 1864/October 1865 patent dates specified upon the aforementioned binder's ticket.
