One of the most remarkable art photography books of our time. Jonathan Miller turns his attention to photography, and unlike other crucial texts on the subject, he tackles it by creating his own photographs, and then reflects on or "pairs" them with brilliant, aphoristic fragments that are all prefaced with a title. These are visual and literary essays on anything and everything, which are the true subject of an unspecialized, freelance artist/intellectual of the first rank. If the photographs were taken nowhere in particular, the texts may be said to be about nothing in particular: "These are just bits and pieces from nowhere in particular. The hope is that they add up to something more than the sum of their randomly scavenged parts" (Jonathan Miller). Of course, they do. Jonathan Miller is one of the most important and most influential writer/stage director/art historian/intellectuals alive. Originally a member of the legendary group, "Beyond The Fringe", Jonathan Miller has gone on to become the Renaissance Man of contemporary Western culture. His stage directions of the classics as well as opera and new works are now part of the theatrical canon. A doctor by training, he never practised, but produced the ground-breaking "The Body In Question", widely regarded as the best book (and television documentary series) on the history of medicine. He organized the exhibition called "Mirror Image", and the catalog he wrote to accompany it, "On Reflection", is a great book. An absolute "must-have" title for Jonathan Miller and photography book collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed by Jonathan Miller in green ink-pen on the sponsor/host Bricknell Avenue Literary Society's bookplate, which is pasted on the front free endpaper. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Many copies available online have serious flaws. A rare signed copy thus. One of the greatest artist/thinkers of our time. A fine copy. Synopsis: For the past 30 years Jonathan Miller has been taking photographs of unusual and often overlooked things in the course of his travels and everyday life which somehow caught his eye and which he felt an irresistible urge to record and collect. Armed with only a cheap automatic camera, Miller sought to read and record these snapshots of seemingly bizarre 'bits and pieces'. The result is a unique, highly individual collection of pictures accompanied by Miller's own notebook writings. The images and text fall in no particular order or structure. Their interest lies not in being intellectual or arty. But they represent an opportunity to see things which may ordinarily escape our attention in a new intriguing way and above all allow us an unprecented insight into one of the most fascinating minds of our time. - Never-before-seen photographs and writings of one of our most fascinating cultural thinkers - Highly original, fascinating collection of photographs - Intriguing text gives insight into an extraordinary mind
