About this Item

First edition. Odd and unusual opinions and pronouncements on sex and sexual practices from the Battle Creek doctor famous for the invention (with his brother) of Corn Flakes. Kellogg ran a sanitarium using holistic methods, with a particular focus on nutrition, enemas, exercise and abstinence, and he was known for his "work on the rehabilitation of masturbators, often employing extreme measures, even mutilation, on both sexes. He was an advocate of circumcising young boys to curb masturbation and applying phenol to a young woman's clitoris" (Wikipedia). Topics covered herein include: Sexual Life, Use and Abuse, Chastity, Continence, Marital Excesses, Prevention of Conception, Infanticide and Abortion, The Social Evil, and Solitary Vice. "The prime object of [this book's] preparation has been to call attention to the great prevalence of sexual excesses of all kinds and the heinous crimes resulting from some forms of sexual transgression, and to point out the terrible results which inevitably follow the violation of sexual law" (from the introduction). Small 8vo.; brown cloth lettered and with ornament in gilt on spine and front, blind-stamped borders to boards; brown, coated endpapers; 356 pages, including index, plus 4 pages of ads. Brief underlining and paragraph marked in margin p.89 (a section cautioning against older men "forming unions" with young girls), otherwise near fine. SCARCE TO RARE, perhaps owing to the distribution methods outlined in the introduction, "This work should be judiciously circulated; and to secure this, the publishers will take care to place it in the hands of agents competent to circulate it with discretion." Although not indicated as such in the book, this copy is from the collection of poet, short story writer, and Faulkner scholar Louis Daniel Brodsky. Bookseller Inventory # 54258
