Sorge was an experienced explorer who had been called into duty as expert adviser to Dr. Fanck for one of the most unusual exploratory expeditions of the period. The Universal Dr. Fanck Greenland Expedition was supported by the Danish government under the protectorate of explorer Knud Rasmussen but was led by film producer Arnold Fanck for the purpose of producing the German Universal Tonfilm 'S.O.S. Iceberg'. Dr. Sorge's account is one of the most interesting of the period. It is not only rich with interesting notes and scientific observation but also with spirited accounts of the actors and actresses and other film production personal who's stories are no less arduous and dangerous then those of the explorers and scientist. The exceptional quality of the photographs is no doubt due to the fact that Universal Pictures in America saw to the outfitting of the expedition and thus they were provided with the most state-of-the-art camera equipment available.
